What is Sitar?

Sitar is the iconic stringed instrument of North Indian classical music, played with a wire pick (mizrab) and known for its sympathetic strings and distinctive sustained, ornamented sound. Students learn raga structures, meend (string-bend ornamentation), gat compositions, and improvisational techniques shaped by masters like Ravi Shankar. Our Sitar classes in Dubai serve ages 10+, online or at our Karama studio.

A child who learns to play music for two years under a real teacher gains more than musical skill, they develop the patience to fail, the discipline to practise, and the confidence to perform. Those traits travel with them into every classroom and career they touch later.

Co-founded Melody Makers in 1997. Three decades training musicians, dancers and artists in Dubai.

Why learn Sitar in 2026?

Music education builds skills that transfer everywhere, focus, discipline, working memory, emotional regulation, and confidence on stage. A 30-year longitudinal study from the University of Vermont (Hudziak et al., 2014) found that children who studied a musical instrument showed accelerated cortical development in regions linked to memory and motor skills. Sitar students at Melody Makers also progress through internationally recognised Trinity College London grades, giving them an exam pathway that universities and conservatories accept worldwide.

In a world increasingly shaped by AI and screens, music remains a uniquely human craft. Whether your goal is graded exams, college applications (music supplements help in competitive admissions), a performance career, or simply the joy of playing well, learning sitar now compounds for the rest of your life.

What you will learn in Sitar classes

  • Foundational technique, posture and tone production for sitar
  • Reading music notation, sight-reading, ear training and rhythm
  • Performance practice, solo and ensemble, with stage confidence
  • Trinity / ABRSM / ABGMVM grade preparation where applicable
  • Personalised repertoire across classical, contemporary, film and devotional
  • Practice routines that build long-term progress without burnout
